The Top Workplace Skills Employers Keep Asking For

Zensai recently analyzed 5,000 US Glassdoor job postings from June 2026, and the results send a clear message. The 10 top workplace skills on the list are centered around human interaction, not technical competence.

It’s September 2026. We’re in the era of Generative AI. This statistic should grab your attention…

Communication Will Always Be King

Communication showed up in 56.7% of postings — more than 2,800 listings out of the sample. Companies also value teamwork and collaboration at 45.3%, and after that, the numbers drop into the twenties.

Think about that gap. Employers are asking for communication skills because you can’t be effective in your job unless you know how to communicate. You can have the sharpest strategy in the room, but if you can't explain it, defend it, or bring people along, it won’t gain enough traction.

Companies need effective communicators, now more than ever. They're hiring people who can speak up, write clearly, and make complex ideas land.

Leadership Storytelling: The Skill Hiding Inside the List

While leadership storytelling isn't listed exclusively on the list, it’s a skill that enhances many of the ones that are there.

I’ll help connect the dots for you:

  • Communication:  Leadership storytelling enhances communication impact by building trust and helping ideas land with relatable anecdotes.

  • Teamwork and collaboration: Stories build shared purpose and inspire action.

  • Leadership: The leaders people follow are the ones who can articulate a vision using narratives.

  • Empathy and compassion: You can't tell an impactful story without first understanding your audience and their pain points.

  • Adaptability and flexibility: The best storytellers reshape the message without losing its meaning.

  • Customer service and focus: Every great customer interaction is a story around understanding their needs and solving their problems.

Most of these skills can be enhanced through leadership storytelling. That’s why I call it a leadership multiplier.

Someone who tells a clear, impactful story will not only become an effective communicator. They’ll see additional gains. They’ll collaborate better, lead better, connect with customers better, and adjust faster when circumstances change.

What These Top Workplace Skills Mean For You

If you're building a team, hiring for communication is a good start. Hiring for leadership storytelling skills is even better. It's the difference between someone who can deliver information and someone who can move people to act on it.

And if you're navigating your career journey, remember that technical skills get you in the door. But the people who rise quicker, the ones trusted with bigger rooms and harder conversations, are almost always the ones who are effective storytellers.

The data backs it up. Now it's on us to act on it.
